Exploring a Volcanic Cavern of Tenerife: An Epic Sidemount Adventure

Playa Abama stands as one of the most picturesque and awe-inspiring beaches in Tenerife. Nestled discreetly within the Ritz Carlton hotel's expansive grounds, this pristine public beach boasts a wealth of natural beauty. As you approach the shore, you'll be greeted by the gentle embrace of shallow waters, while the presence of a breakwater ensures tranquillity and calmness at the entry point. Venture beyond the breakwater, and you'll soon find yourself immersed in deeper waters, a mere five-minute swim away from the entrance to a remarkable underwater "cave."

This cavern, undisputedly one of the largest on the island, offers an extraordinary exploration opportunity. In its initial segment, marvel at the sight of graceful stingrays gliding along the edges of the cave. Take a closer look, and you'll discover an array of vibrant anemones, elusive lobsters, and other mesmerising nocturnal marine creatures. Continuing further into the cavern's depths, you'll encounter several underwater air pockets, including one with a remarkable opening to the surface, allowing ethereal beams of light to penetrate the subterranean world below. The cave's floor is predominantly adorned with rocky formations and volcanic sand.

While the cave itself is typically free of strong currents, caution is advised during tide changes and periods of rough ocean conditions, as the swell inside the cave can pose challenges. It's worth noting that the cave can be explored to a depth of approximately 88 metres. To ensure the utmost safety and preparedness, we strictly adhere to the policy of not taking untrained divers into any overhead environments. For participation in this captivating dive, a minimum certification of cavern diver is required. We strongly advise fellow divers against venturing into overhead environments, even if their instructor or guide suggests otherwise. Such individuals likely lack the necessary training and knowledge to handle potential emergencies. Our guiding principle is to prioritise safety above all else.
